Alice Maude-Roxby studied Fine Art at Newcastle, and Photography in the class of Dieter Appelt at the Hochschule der Kunste, Berlin. National and international grants and fellowships enabled her to research and make work abroad, including Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD), Berlin, Leverhulme Trust, Norway, Japan Foundation, Tokyo, Arts and Humanities Research Council and Arts Council England in the UK.
Initially working within a fine art context, her work was included in exhibitions at The Photographers’ Gallery, London, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and England & Co in the UK, and various galleries in Germany and Scandinavia. More recently she has focused on curating, photography and writing. She has been involved in an extensive body of work looking at the collaborative processes involved in the recording of performance. This work has been published with Tate Liverpool in Arts, Lies and Videotape: Exposing Performance; Artwords Press On Record: Advertising, architecture and the actions of Gina Pane; and John Hansard Gallery, Live Art on Camera. She curated the exhibition Anti-Academy for John Hansard Gallery 2013-14 which examined the activities of three experiments in art education in the 1960s in Tokyo, Copenhagen and Iowa City, USA. Camera Austria will publish the co-authored with Stefanie Seibold book Censored Realities in 2018. Resist: be modern (again) is a co-curated with Stefanie Seibold exhibition that takes place at John Hansard Gallery in 2019.
She was Photography Research Fellow and Lecturer at Winchester School of Art from 1995 to 1999, Senior Lecturer in BA and MA Fine Art at Sheffield Hallam University from 1999 to 2007 and Course Director of BA Photography at Kingston University from 2007 to 2011. She was Photography Programme Leader at Falmouth University from 2011-13, Head of Photography at Falmouth University 2013-17 and has been Fine Art Programme Leader at Middlesex University since 2017.
Talks on her practice have taken place at ICA, London, Japan Foundation, Goldsmiths University, John Hansard Gallery, Winchester School of Art, Wimbledon College of Art, Courtauld Institute, MOMA Oxford, Copenhagen University, Itinerant Arts Copenhagen, Bigakko, Tokyo, Miss Read at Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, Photology, Hastings amongst others.
