Born and raised in the Netherlands, I studied Philosophy, Linguistics and Dutch Language and Literature at Radboud University Nijmegen and Leiden University. For my doctoral work I also spent time at Leuven University and Memorial University Newfoundland. Prior to coming to Middlesex, I taught at the University of Central Lancashire (where I founded the M.A. program in Rhetoric) and Leiden University. I worked for several years in a number of functions for Royal Dutch Shell, in The Hague, Amsterdam and London. I hold an honorary appointment as Associate Fellow of the Institute of Modern Languages Research, School of Advanced Study, University of London, where I direct the Ernst Bloch Center for Gerrman Thought.
