In this essay, the writers consider how digital technology and algorithm reverse-engineer old technologies such as analogue films. Exploring the works of experimental artist Les LeVeque and employing Gilles Deleuze's conceptual model of contingency, the writers discuss the ways in which digital technology makes use of the vast archive of Hollywood movies and transforms the theoretical discourses around them. They show how the digital mediascape presents a series of theoretical and political provocations, unsettling how we think about the image, interface, spectatorship, and copyright. They show how these ideas give rise to the possibility of freedom from authority, be they psychoanalytic or proprietary.
