Abstract
This article consdiers the increased vulnerability of the British workforce in the year following the financial crisis of 2008. It focuses on health related issues, outlining the the risk to which those in employment are exposed, and then looks at the extent of unemployment. It questions whether trade unions, employers or government agencies can do more to assist members of the workforce and concludes the workers themselves will have to take greater personal responsibility, adapting to the harsh climate. It traces the events following the crisis in 2008 particularly in 2012 when the severity of the recession was realised, drawing extensively on Government pronouncements and opinions expressed by commentators in the major broadsheets.
