Abstract

This paper is about the design and implementation of the Cambridge Wireless Testbed. The testbed was unique because it was the first academic testbed built specifically to study vertical handover. It was used to develop client-based handover techniques and PROTON, a reactive policy management layer. It is worth emphasizing that the testbed was a real testbed and used LAN, WLAN and GPRS connections. Most of the academic research in this area is usually confined to simulations or analytical models. The paper shows in great detail how the testbed was implemented and how results were obtained etc.
