Abstract

This paper describes a client-based handoff mechanism. The work is significant for the Mobile Internet because IPv6 does not define a specific handover technique to manage the movement of mobile devices. We introduced the idea of a cache to hold recent Router Advertisements (RAs) from different networks. The cache is used to select the next point of attachment based on several factors. Results from an experimental test-bed showed that the mechanism reduced handoff latency by 50%. This work was the first work that clearly showed the benefits of client-based handoff and a mechanism, the RA cache, to implement it.
