Abstract

In the current study, Turkish norms for age of acquisition, name agreement, frequency and object familiarity were obtained for all the pictures from the Snodgrass and Vanderwart (1980) cohort. Consequently, a subset of 160 pictures that were rated as familiar objects and had name agreement were selected and presented for naming. The results of a multiple regression analysis show that age of acquisition, frequency and letter length are reliable predictors of RTs in Turkish. Similar results were also reported for Spanish (Cuetos, Ellis & Alvarez, 1999). The implication of these results are discussed within the arbitrary mapping hypothesis and in relation to a robust age of acquisition effect recently reported for naming words in Turkish
