Abstract
This essay is an overview of iconographical problems in extant approaches to the careers of black artists in the 1980s. As such it represents a counterpoint to my more directly monographical, book-length accounts of the work of film-maker Isaac Julien (2001) or James Van Der Zee (2002), for example. Whilst such theoretical issues are explored in these latter pieces, this is in a less overtly self-conscious manner.
