Iconography after identity

Mercer, Kobena (2005) Iconography after identity. In: Shades ofBblack: Assembling Black Arts in 1980s Britain. Bailey, David A., Baucom, Ian and Boyce, Sonia, eds. John Hope Franklin Center Book . Duke University Press. ISBN 0822334208. [Book Section]

This essay is an overview of iconographical problems in extant approaches to the careers of black artists in the 1980s. As such it represents a counterpoint to my more directly monographical, book-length accounts of the work of film-maker Isaac Julien (2001) or James Van Der Zee (2002), for example. Whilst such theoretical issues are explored in these latter pieces, this is in a less overtly self-conscious manner.
