Abstract
Instrumental quartet for oboe, violin, viola and cello, drawing upon the music of 14th-century French composer Matheus de Sancto Johanne from the Ars Subtilior (‘subtler art’) tradition, and especially his ballade ‘Science n’a nul annemi’, from which the music freely quotes. The work was first performed at Kings Place on 15 May 2022, by French violinist Philippe Graffin, Capucine Prin (oboe), Rosalind Ventris (viola) and Lidy Blijdorp (cello).
