Abstract

This chapter is a review of tourism throughout the Pacific Islands. It situates tourism in the colonial experience, and shows that its development has often been constrained by political upheaval and unrest and, sometimes, 'traditional' land tenure. In some countries, however, mass tourism has been able to develop. At the same time, sustainable tourism development is the subject of much rhetoric, which regrettably is rarely matched in practice.
