Abstract
An exhibition titled Through the Female Gaze: Women and Work in Italy since the 1950s was held in London (December 2021) and then Edinburgh (March-May 2022). The curator and the organisers discuss in this article its content and importance. The exhibition combined photos of militant female photographers such as Letizia Battaglia, Marcella Campagnano, Lisetta Carmi, the Collettivo Donne Fotoreporter, Cristina Omenetto, Lori Sammartino, and younger photographers such as Michela Palermo and Francesca Volpi, together with images coming from the Donata Pizzi collection, Bologna UDI archive and Noi Donne. These photos played a key role in supporting women’s battles for gender equality in the 1960s and 1970s and in questioning deeply rooted gender stereotypes on women’s role in society. They also challenge conventional depictions of work, reminding us of the numerous forms that it can take beyond paid labour.
