Abstract
Introduction of ever tighter ethics codes/committees/procedures have raised concerns for Qualitative Social Science research as the former strictly regulate the researcher/respondent relationship which is central to such research. Reflecting on 15 years’ worth of fieldwork experience, emerging ethical dilemmas led us to wonder if our own research practice is at odds with extant ethical rules and ask if alternative ethics is possible to avoid instrumentalism. In this video we question the assumptions of mainstream ethics discourses and seek to identify an alternative approach. The outcome are principles and practical elements of an alternative approach, called an ‘ethics of truth’. One that can guide researchers to recognise and navigate the “messy” reality of conflict-ridden social world.
