Abstract
Thinning interventions in the mountain forest have to be, from silvicultural points of view, best possibly analyzed to constantly and critically question common processes in professional practice. The problem with significant topicality was summed up in a research question. Can thinning stocks under the heavy circumstances of the mountain silviculture with consideration of the intervened strength, the improvement for the stabilisations of the stocks and the increase of the mixture of arboreals as well as the time of the intervention from the practical perspective be ideally edited in a way, that those measures can present an economical success and can forest stands that will be thinned in the future be subjected to a priority ranking from these findings?
As the Austrian forest inventory shows, thinning stands are continually growing. Those stands must be urgently adapted, so that the multifunctional requirements to the mountain forest can be fulfilled. For the proprietors of the forest those measures are mostly little profitable and superficially linked to high costs. This study follows a two step approach. On the one hand the quality of the wood showing process according to the guidelines of mountain silviculture will be checked and on the other hand the predicted value development of the forest stands will be compared. Therefore the thinning stands will be analyzed and economically considered before and after the intervention. The empirical study contains a lot of practical relevance. The results show, that even under difficult circumstances of mountain silviculturing and with the expectation of consistent log market conditions you can economically work successfully.
The link between the average breast height diameter and a predicted increase in value of silviculture makes a future prioritization of upcoming treatment of thinning areas by single companies possible. The classification of thinning areas according to operative, tactical or strategic points of view is made possible by the present model and lies in the economic interest of forest owners respectively also in the interest of the forestry workers to economically optimize the care measures. The results of the economic study bring clear realisations and basics to the thinning topic from an economical perspective and present an aid for the forestry management. Because of the quantitative rating of those interventions economic optimizations are possible for future care measures.
