Abstract

This publication represents an important milestone in the ArtsCross story. The initiative from its inception in 2009 as Danscross in Beijing featured public events in the form of performances and conferences, and this continued throughout the three editions of what became ArtsCross in Taipei 2011, Beijing 2012, London 2013 and Beijing again in 2014. It has also generated a range of written outcomes including published papers submitted by individuals, blogs and reflective accounts on websites and individual and group presentations. However, this is the first occasion on which we, as a group of academic observers and artists based in mainland China, Taiwan and the United Kingdom, commit ourselves wholeheartedly to the printed word. The papers that follow demonstrate that the meeting place that is ArtsCross/Danscross (跨艺·舞动无界), an English language amalgam of the Chinese and English names, has stimulated responses from a range of perspectives reflecting the numerous ways that the project touched and inspired those involved. As my colleagues and co-directors, Professors Xu Rui and Wang Yunyu, have contributed papers to this collection, the daunting task of writing this introduction has fallen to me.
