Abstract
This paper will consider how the actual conduct of armed conflict has developed and how the interpretation of international humanitarian law has evolved. In doing so, it will reflect on the prospects for the future development of the law, exploring the characterisation of new forms of armed conflict including the use of remotely piloted vehicles, cyber operations, and autonomous weapon systems. The approach adopted will seek to sketch an agenda for research on challenges to the existing legal framework and the possibilities that exist for the future development of the law.
