Abstract

Your Story! Stories of Flight and Migration at Kunsthalle Emden
May 13 to November 5, 2017
Curated by Antje-Britt Mählmann

The city of Emden has been honoured as 2017 "Reformation City of Europe" and focuses on the current issue of migration in a comprehensive program. In the 16th century Emden alongside Geneva and Wittenberg was the most important site of the Reformation, as it received thousands of religious refugees from the neighbouring Netherlands during the Spanish-Dutch War (1568-1648). The exhibition Your Story! wants to give space for depictions of individual stories of flight and migration in modern and contemporary art.

The title of the exhibition, on the one hand, aims to appeal to anyone who had to leave their homeland, but also points out that under certain circumstances this topic could affect everyone. Refugees from different generations, displaced persons from the former East Prussia or Sudetenland, boat people from Vietnam and refugees from the current civil war zones live in the region today.

In addition to works from the collection of Max Beckmann, Lyonel Feininger and others, works by contemporary artists can be seen, including Ergin Cavusoglu, Manaf Halbouni, Antonio Paucar, Anny and Sibel Öztürk, Mika Sperling and Hamid Sulaiman.
