Abstract
This article looks at young people’s lived experience of music, focusing on one particular example of creative symbolic work, namely oral poetry, in the form of rap and reggae DJing. The article draws on interviews and discussions with a group of 20 young people aged 18-26 from the Birmingham and Wolverhampton areas of the West Midlands in the UK.
