Abstract
An overview of 35 years of art with communities, particularly focusing on issues of how a work is initiated, negotiated, parameters of collaboration and/or participation; use of objects, fragments and narratives; managing collective input, multiple partners and participants; convergences of educational process and artistic production; impact of new technologies; the continuum of process/product; locating the aesthetic; troubleshooting; feedback and evaluation; funding; effects of working as an individual or through an organisation; and the role of art in social change.
