Abstract
The chapter covers the foundations of computer forensics and in particular investigates the data acquisition stage under the governance of current guidelines and recommendations. From a professional's perspective the paper outlines procedures to prevent spoliation of digital evidence. However, as shown these guidelines and recommendations are inadequate and in many cases the evidential integrity of the data is questionable and some contamination occurs. To demonstrate this, the acquisition of data from a mobile phone was used.
