Abstract
The concept of ‘shared’ or ‘non-shared’ childhood environment is widely utilised in behavioural genetic studies as a residual for non-explained heritability estimates.
However, the content of such shared or non-shared experience is rarely measured in close detail nor examined in social psychological or psychodynamic approaches to child development, to complement the genetic approach.
The study reported here examined detailed childhood histories of maltreatment and recent clinical disorder in 90 pairs of adolescent/young adult London siblings. The aim was to see which experiences of neglect or abuse were more likely to be shared or non-shared, and whether the non-shared elements related to maternal characteristics such as her psychosocial risk or history of depression.
