On air
Miller, Graeme (2012) On air. [Show/Exhibition]
Abstract
On Air was sited on the balcony of the V&A and could be listened to along the length of Exhibition Road. Visitors could pick up an On Air radio from the Road Show volunteers or information point during festival operation hours: broadcasting from 6pm weekdays, and 12pm weekends.
Artist, composer and theatre maker Graeme Miller created a continuous commentary on the everyday life of Exhibition Road for nine days in July and August. On the rooftops above Exhibition Road, Miller set up a temporary radio station and invited broadcasters from the worlds of sport and the arts to commentate on passing action. They narrated the constant flow of activity visible from their eyrie, from passers-by below them to clouds over the North Downs, to planes landing at Heathrow. The audio commentary was made available to passers-by via a low range FM broadcast on bespoke in-ear radios on the street itself. The observed may paradoxically have become observer all at the same time.
