Abstract
This catalogue essay starts with a consideration of the history of International Women's Day and asks what is it that we are celebrating about women artists? Is there a link between women artists in the history of modernism and contemporary feminist art practices? How can we understand the position of the women artist given the shift in position between their under-representation in Modernism as exception and Other and their relative invisibility as the new Norm in contemporary art where they now appear as more 50% of all artists.
