Abstract

Half A Penny ... takes the audience through a roller coaster of cut up images satirising political thought and consumerism in ... layers of hypnotic dance performances ... shades of humour to break through the intoxicating intensity of the piece. The satire is mirrored by lyrics: "I'll offer up the service of my body and my mind". And of course they do … but to the detriment of the controlling forces of oppression, literally losing her clothes as reality falls apart. The dancers rejoice bringing the audience into play. All three dance characters are fully evolved making Half a Penny as entertaining as it is thought-provoking. - Colin Hambrook.
In The Other Side Of The Coin 'A dancer approaches me with a glass of red wine which I imagine to be Spanish. I am not alone in this, each member of the audience accept a drink. 'DDBH', a drum and guitar duo, begin. A bass note is prominent, militaristic, repetitive and demanding, creating an austere environment. Franco is in town riding on his pony. The wine, the music, crashes into a communion, which is increasingly sensuous and between the sexes. I imagine accusations flying around as the women keep their fingers pointy. It is you. No you. You did it. You are not to be trusted. Pointed out for punishment perhaps or maybe it is you he slept with! You, you and you. The poet is a sex pot. Lorca is on stage now hurling out exclamatory lines.Brush strokes of dance have held me spell-bound. I will remember this day a long time! - Richard Downes, DAO London.
