Abstract

It examines the expansion of the private sector in an otherwise overwhelmingly state-owned, socialist economy. The principal novelty in the Cuban emerging private sector is the rise of the markets and the appearance of a myriad small entrepreneurs who play a functional and useful role in the national economy. Despite this development, this new group of small entreprenerus do not present a threat to the existing state of affairs in the Caribbean island.
