This paper proposed an approach for integrating molecular biology databases based on a component database. The component database was modelled and various conceptual schemas developed. A unique feature of the component database was that it only focused the requirements of users associated with one research laboratory, hence, it maintained local autonomy. The paper also established the concept of image object keying for multidatabase queries which has the potential to replace the conventional SQL method.
