Abstract

This essay on John is a complement to the work developed in my book Modern Life and Modern Subjects: British Art in the Early 20th Century, published by Yale in 2000. It belongs with my recent book Dante Gabriel Rosetti (produced as part of the Tate British Artists series : Tate Publishing, London, 2003) and 'Messing About in Boats: E. J. Gregory's Boulter's Lock'.
