This essay is part of a wider series of articles criticising the proposal to subordinate the practice of psychotherapy and psychoanalysis to State control via the Health Professions Council. As well as the opposition to the consequences of this coming from psychoanalysts - of which current I am a notable representative - the proposal has also been criticised by the British Psychological Society. Other places where I have developed the importance of these criticisms are: (1) B.Burgoyne: ""L'Impasse dans la Chambre des Lords"" in La Lettre Mensuelle de l'Ecole de la Cause Freudienne, No 228, pp. 38 - 40, Paris, May 2004; (2) B,Burgoyne: Curtailments of Desire"" in Psychoanalytical Notebooks, No 14, pp.150 - 152, London, 2005; and (3) My article (""Psychoanalysis and State Regulation"") published as the lead article in (Eds. Parker I. & Revelli S)/ Psychoanalytic Practice and State Regulation/, Karnac, London, 2007.
