Abstract

A new algorithm is reported that simulates the mechanisms of biological vision in performing classification of traffic sign images, which can increase the recognition rate of signs up to 96% under real viewing conditions. The work also made a significant contribution towards a better understanding of human vision behaviour. Part of the work was carried out in collaboration with Russian scientists on the development of perception models of human vision. This collaboration resulted in an award from the European Commission for Tele-imaging in Medicine (TIME) (CN/ASIA-IT&C/009(91450)).
