Abstract

Examines the international oversight by the European Court of Human Rights with regard to the conflict in Chechnya. Provides statistical evidence of European Court of Human Rights judgments relating to Chechnya. Describes the application of the Court's admissibility criteria in practice. Discusses the Russian Government's arguments concerning the non-disclosure of documents, and the Court's response to the situation. Considers the systematic failure of the Russian authorities to investigate human rights violations in Chechnya. Addresses the application of the European Convention on Human Rights 1950 art.3, and issues of damages and just satisfaction.
