Abstract

Published to celebrate the bicentenary of Uvedale Price’s Essay on the Picturesque and Richard Payne Knight’s poem The Landscape, this booklet considers the role of text and images in the development and spread of the Picturesque ideal and the influence this had on the architecture and landscape of the late Georgian era.

Contributors include Charles Watkins on Picturesque Woodland Management, Timothy Clayton on The Print and the Spread of the Picturesque Ideal, John Wilton Ely on Beckford, Fonthill and the Picturesque and Christopher Woodward on the Picturesque in Bath: the End of the Terrace and the Rise of the Villa.
